Fines for illegal roadblocks already reach R$18 million; there is a risk of fuel shortages

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) reported, this Wednesday (2), that 1.992 fines have already been imposed on protesters who blocked roads in undemocratic acts following the defeat of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the election. Together, they total more than R$18 million. Blockages also cause the risk of fuel shortages.

The Ministry of Justice reported that the fines depend on the type of infraction and can vary between R$5 and R$17. The most expensive fine is for the leaders who organize the protests, whether individuals or companies.

The statement also says that drivers who use cars or trucks to block highways will be penalized with a “very serious infraction”, that is, a fine of R$5 and suspension of the right to drive for 12 months.

In the latest bulletin, the PRF reported that it removed 601 closures and blockades, and that there remain at least 156 other obstructions on Brazilian federal highways.

Risk of fuel shortages

The National Federation of Fuel, Biofuel and Natural Gas Distributors (Brasilcom) warned, in a statement, of the risk of fuel shortages as a result of demonstrations that have been taking place in several states with partial or total road blockages.

“Brasilcom recommends coordinated actions by the responsible authorities to urgently unblock roads and, where necessary, protect and monitor the movement of fuel transport, aiming to ensure the supply of retail stations, supermarkets and hospitals, which are mainly affected by supply interruptions” , said the federation in the statement.

Also according to Brasilcom, members have participated with real-time information about the blockages and continuous actions to assist government authorities “in solving this serious problem that affects the entire population”.
