Blue November: patients and doctors hold a “lecture” at the Ipiranga Museum about prostate cancer

The Ipiranga Museum, in the south of São Paulo, was the place chosen for the awareness raising event about Blue November, the month that marks the prevention of prostate cancer. This Saturday (19) doctors and patients will hold a kind of class, with exercises, stretching and information on prevention and treatment of the disease.

The action – a partnership between the museum and Rede D'Or Oncology – calls on society to debate prostate cancer and encourage men of all ages to take care of their health and prevent it, through a healthier life.

Every year, more than 60 thousand cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in Brazil. This places the disease as the second most common among men, behind only non-melanoma skin cancer, according to data from the National Cancer Institute.

“When diagnosed at an advanced stage, the chance of curing prostate cancer is only 10% to 20%”, warns doctor Paulo Hoff, President of Oncologia D'or.

Drawing attention to Blue November

Last Thursday (17th), World Prostate Cancer Prevention Day, the Ipiranga Museum, in the south of São Paulo, received special lighting, in shades of blue.

Overcoming the taboo

Rectal examination – necessary to detect changes and prostate cancer – is still considered a taboo among men. But it is essential for obtaining a more accurate diagnosis regarding the disease, warns doctor Paulo Hoff.

It is important that men, over the age of 50, see doctors and undergo exams. Those who are in the group with risk factors should seek treatment from the age of 45.

“The rectal examination, despite the resistance of most men, is a fundamental exam for diagnosis. It is part of the medical examination. It is not possible to prevent the occurrence of prostate cancer, but we can make an early diagnosis. Unfortunately, because of this resistance, we still have a 20% rate of late diagnosis”, warns the specialist.

Signs

The disease shows some signs of manifestation, such as difficulty urinating or dark urine – which is also common to other problems such as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Therefore, it is important that men undergo regular medical follow-up and keep exams up to date.
