Stiell will take up his position “soon”, said the UN secretary-general's spokesperson, suggesting that he would be in post at the next UN climate conference, COP27, which will be held in November in Egypt.
Simon Stiell has been Minister for the Environment and Climate Resilience for the past five years. During this period, he tirelessly called for more ambition in the fight against global warming during UN climate summits.
Stiell will replace Mexican Patricia Espinosa, who served two terms since 2016.
