What is a lung infection, a disease that affects the Coldplay singer

Dry cough or cough, high and persistent fever, loss of appetite and headaches are some of the symptoms of the disease that affects singer Chris Martin, who announced this Tuesday (4) a lung infection. Coldplay's October shows in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have been postponed.

Lung infection occurs “when a microorganism – usually bacteria or viruses – proliferates in the lung, causing local inflammation. This can progress to causing inadequate functioning of the respiratory system, leading to shortness of breath and, in more serious cases, respiratory failure”, explains pulmonologist Rogério Souza, from Fleury Medicina e Saúde.

Lung infection occurs due to two main factors: exposure to microorganisms and a decrease in the body's defenses. According to the specialist, the causes occur due to the presence of other diseases, medical treatments and acute stressful situations.

On social media, fans comment on the heavy rain that the band Coldplay recently experienced at Rock in Rio:

Treatment

“Medications with direct action against these microorganisms are used, that is, antibiotics or antivirals, respectively”, explains pulmonologist Rogério Souza.

Rogério also points out that the treatment has a quick resolution, however, the patient must follow medical instructions for complete recovery of lung functions. “The initial response to treatment begins within 24 to 72 hours, but full recovery can take 3 to 4 weeks, on average. More serious cases, which lead to respiratory failure, may have an even slower recovery.”
