UN demands security zone around nuclear power plant in Ukraine

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) called on Tuesday (6) for a "safety zone" to be set up around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The United Nations agency warned that the situation is "unsustainable" at the center, occupied by Russian troops and the scene of frequent fighting.

“The situation is unsustainable” at the plant, warns the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in a 52-page report, released this Tuesday (6).

“It is urgent to take provisional measures”, such as “the establishment of a nuclear safety and protection zone”, he adds.

Zaporizhzhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and a leak of radioactive material could cause a major catastrophe, like what happened with Chernobyl in 1986.
