Pope Francis spent the night well after surgery

Pope Francis, 86, had a good night at the Gemelli hospital in Rome after undergoing abdominal hernia surgery, the Vatican said on Thursday (8).

“The night went well, there will be more information later in the morning,” the Holy See press service said in a brief statement.

The Argentine pontiff underwent a three-hour operation under general anesthesia on Wednesday to remove painful “adhesions” on his abdominal wall resulting from a colon operation in April 2021.

His surgeon Sergio Alfieri said it was a “benign” operation that will not leave any consequences and highlighted that the pope does not suffer from other pathologies.

Now he will have to rest for several days on the tenth floor of the Gemelli Polyclinic, known as the “hospital of the popes”, in the same room that John Paul II used on several occasions.

All hearings have been canceled until June 18.

At the end of March, the pontiff was already admitted to the Gemelli hospital with a respiratory infection that required treatment with antibiotics.

Francisco has suffered from recurring health problems since his election in 2013 and has chronic knee pain that forces him to move in a wheelchair or with the help of a cane.
