Pope has second peaceful night in hospital after operation

Pope Francis, 86, spent a peaceful second night at the Gemelli hospital in Rome, where he continues his convalescence of several days after an abdominal operation, the Vatican announced this Friday (9).

The Argentine supreme pontiff underwent surgery on Wednesday under general anesthesia for three hours to remove painful “adhesions” on his abdominal wall as a result of a colon operation in 2021.

"Last night was good too,” the Holy See's press office said in a brief statement Friday morning, adding that more information would be provided throughout the day.

The pope is on a water diet and his progress is regular, the Vatican said on Thursday. “His general health is good, he is awake and breathing naturally,” according to his medical team.

Francis was supposed to spend several days hospitalized on the tenth floor of the Gemelli Polyclinic, known as the “hospital of the popes”, in the same room that John Paul II occupied on numerous occasions.

The Vatican said all its hearings were canceled until June 18.

The pope has a long medical history. At the age of 21, he suffered pleurisy, a serious illness that led to the partial removal of a lung, as well as knee and hip problems.

On several occasions he has reduced his obligations due to his health, which fuels uncertainty and speculation.

At the end of March, the pontiff was admitted to the Gemelli hospital because of a respiratory infection that forced him to take antibiotics for three days.
