political crisis
O Peru has experienced a wave of intense protests since the former president Pedro Castillo he was removed by Congress on December 7. Castillo ended up being arrested for trying to commit a self-coup, with the closure of Parliament and the convening of a Constituent Assembly, among other measures.
The crisis also reflects the immense gap that exists between the capital and the poor provinces that support Castillo, who is of indigenous origin. The inhabitants of these regions saw his election as a form of revenge against the power of Lima.
The protesters are calling for political changes and also want accountability for the deaths that occurred during the acts. Since December, clashes between the groups and security forces have left more than 50 people dead.
