Poverty in Brazil has seen a record increase and reaches its highest level since 2012

In 2021, around 62,5 million people (or 29,4% of the country's population) were in poverty, considering the lines proposed by the World Bank. Among these, 17,9 million were in extreme poverty. These were the highest numbers and highest percentages for both groups, since the beginning of the series, in 2012. The information is from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Between 2020 and 2021, there was a record increase in these two groups: the number below the poverty line grew by 22,7% and that of people in extreme poverty increased by 48,2%.
