M&M's controversy: 'Sexuality' of mascots bothers conservatives and brand removes characters from campaign

The candy brand M&M's has decided to stop using the famous multicolored characters in the shape of chocolate chips in its advertisements, following a controversy over the “sexuality” of the mascots. They were criticized by the conservative right in the United States, who consider the characters politicized.

The controversy began with the launch, in September, of a new member of the “spokescandies” family, called Purple (Violet).

This was the third female character in the group, after Green (green) and Brown (brown), created, according to M & Ms, “to represent acceptance and inclusion.”

The color violet usually symbolizes support for the community LGBTQIA + and the expression of homosexuality.

The arrival of Purple provoked criticism and internet users blamed the company Mars Wrigley, manufacturer of M & Ms, for politicizing popular sweets.

According to them, the characters of M & Ms became "Woke“, a word used to designate activism against all forms of discrimination and exclusion in relation to one or more minorities.

The controversy resurfaced at the beginning of January, with the sale of a special limited edition pack, exclusively containing the three colors of the female characters: green, brown and purple.

"The 'woke' M&M's are back“, protested Tucker Carlson, one of the main presenters at Fox News, known for the conservative positions of several of its stellar professionals. Ironically, he said that Green was "possibly lesbian" is that Purple was "obese“, referring to its oval shape, similar to that of M&M's stuffed with peanuts. 😖

A year ago, Carlson had already criticized the M & Ms for replacing Green's white boots with sneakers, making him “less sexy”. 😡

In a statement published this Monday (23) on Twitter, the M & Ms spoke about the topic:

The company reported that because of this it decided to suspend the characters.

The mascots will be replaced in new advertising campaigns by the actress and comedian Maya Rudolph.
