Federal Police make first arrests of schemes linked to secret budget in Maranhão

Two men were arrested this Friday (14), in Maranhão, suspected of embezzling public resources related to the secret budget – the alleged scheme in which the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) directs funds to serve deputies and senators, in exchange for support in Congress. In Maranhão alone, the Federal Police are investigating the embezzlement of 69 million reais from the Unified Health System (SUS).

The two arrested in the operation "Breaking bones" are the brothers Roberto and Renato Rodrigues de Lima, suspected of working in a wide criminal network involving the Unified Health System (SUS) in municipalities in Maranhão, as revealed by a report from Piauí.

According to the investigation, the scheme worked like this: city halls registered medical care that never existed, but received money from the parliamentary amendments to the secret budget. A city, for example, with 12 thousand inhabitants, received money to 12 thousand finger x-rays. This means that all city residents would undergo examinations.

The most serious thing about this scheme is that health treatments – consultations, exams, hospitalizations – are not taking place as they should, even with so much money being sent, an indication of misappropriation of public funds and corruption. Therefore, the PF has been carrying out search and seizure warrants since Friday morning in Maranhão and also in Piaui.

The search and arrest warrants were approved by the Court, which also ordered the freezing of R$57 million in the assets of those being investigated. The names of the others investigated were not disclosed. Counting on seizures in other municipalities, up to R$78 million was blocked, according to a report from G1.

In addition to the arrests and seizures, the operation resulted in the removal of civil servants from public positions and the suspension of the right of businessmen and companies under investigation to participate in tenders and contract with public bodies, as reported by Terra.

In total, the Federal Police – in action with the Comptroller General of the Union and the Federal Public Ministry – served 16 warrants in the municipalities of Igarapé Grande (MA), Lago do Junco (MA), Lago dos Rodrigues (MA), Caxias ( MA), Timon (MA), Parnaíba (PI) and Teresina (PI).
