Hair styling ointment is vetoed by Anvisa

Products called "styling pomades", mainly used for braiding and fixing hair, can no longer be sold. The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) banned the sale of any brand while investigations into cases of poisoning by the products are ongoing. The ointment drips when in contact with water and can even cause blindness.

According to Anvisa's resolution, analyzes and other possible measures will be carried out to complete the investigation, and only after this will it be possible to determine whether there are brands or models that can be sold again.

And be aware: ointments in homes or beauty salons, which were purchased before the publication of Anvisa's resolution, that is, before February 9th, should also not be used while the measure is in force!!

Understand the case

In December last year, Anvisa warned of the risk of temporary blindness, caused by the use of hair braiding and styling products sold throughout the country.

Among the adverse effects observed are temporary loss of vision, severe burning in the eyes, intense tearing, itching, redness and swelling of the eyes, headaches and intense hair loss.

According to available information, the incidents occurred mainly after users who applied the ointments dived into the sea, swimming pool, took a shower in the rain, or perspired. This is because the ointment runs down the face and comes into contact with the eyes.

Guidelines

To protect the population, Anvisa advises consumers not to use or purchase these ointments.

If use is recent, hair should be washed carefully, with the head tilted back, so that the product does not run into the eyes.

In case of accidental contact, eyes should be washed immediately with plenty of water. If there is poisoning, the advice is to seek the nearest health service.

For professionals in beauty salons and commerce in general, Anvisa reinforces that products cannot be sold and warns that they should not be used on any customer.

The recommendation also applies to those who handle the product.

In case of unwanted effects, it is possible to inform Anvisa through a form online. The agency recommends that, when registering, the person has the product label data on hand.
