The collapse of a suspension bridge in the state of Gujarat, in western India, this Sunday (30), caused dozens of deaths and injuries. At the time of the fall, there were hundreds of people on the bridge, which is in the city of Morbi and over the Machchu River, according to local TV channel Zee News.

Images broadcast by the TV channel showed dozens of people clinging to the cables of the collapsed bridge as emergency teams tried to rescue them.

The historic 230-meter bridge was built during British rule in the XNUMXth century. It had been closed for renovation for six months and was reopened to the public last week.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in his home state of Gujarat for a three-day visit, said he has directed the state's chief minister to urgently mobilize teams for the rescue operation.

“We can confirm that 30 people lost their lives, many were rescued from the river and some are still missing,” said Amit Jhala, administrator of the state hospital where the victims were taken. It is estimated that more than 400 people were on the bridge at the time of the accident.
