Prejudice: “I was treated like a criminal” says PT deputy elected to the Legislative Assembly of Paraná

The councilor of Curitiba - and now deputy elected by the PT - Renato Freitas denounced having been discriminated against and treated "like criminals" by employees and police officers of the Legislative Assembly of Paraná. The politician, who is black, said he was called a suspect in the environment that will be his workplace for the next four years.

Discrimination, racial slurs or political violence?

Renato Freitas was elected state deputy with 57.880 votes. Even so, he was the target of suspicion and discrimination while following a vote on the privatization project of the Paraná Energy Company (Copel). Watch the video he posted on Twitter:

Repercussion in the networks

Soon after Renato Freitas' complaint, there was a wave of rejection of the episode of prejudice on social media. Politicians and followers began posting the phrase “Respect Congressman Renato Freitas”:

Who is Renato Freitas?

As a councilor, the young PT member – black, peripheral and from a poor background – has already been the target of political persecution within the Curitiba City Council.

He had his mandate revoked by the conservative majority, in February 2022, for having been part of a protest at the Igreja dos Pretos – built by slaves in the historic sector of Curitiba – against racism.

In season, the parish priest denied that there had been an offensive act against the Catholic religion, but, by 23 votes, the Chamber plenary revoked Freitas' mandate. His mandate was reestablished by the courts.

O Minister Luís Roberto Barroso of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) saw racism in the Chamber's decision and annulled the impeachment process. (G1)
