IDB President is fired after involvement with employee

The board of governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) fired its president, Mauricio Claver-Carone, this Monday (26), after an investigation concluded that he maintained an intimate relationship with a subordinate, violating the institution's rules. Claver-Carone "will step down from his role as president of the bank effective September 26, 2022," the IDB said in a statement

He will be replaced by the executive vice president, Honduran Reina Irene Mejía Chacón, under the leadership of the executive board, until a new president is elected.

Claver-Carone was promoted to the position by US President Donald Trump in 2020, breaking with the tradition that the position be held by a Latin American.

The highest authority in the IDB, made up of Economy Ministers from its 48 member countries, decided to remove him in an electronic vote that began last Friday.
