The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, announced this Thursday (18), Wednesday night in Brazil, that she will leave office in February.

“For me, the time has come,” she declared at a meeting with members of her Labor Party. “I don’t have the energy for another four years.”

Ardern, who became prime minister in a coalition government in 2017 and led her center-left party to a sweeping election victory three years later, has seen her party and her personal popularity fall in recent polls.

In her first public appearance since Parliament went into recess a month ago, she told the Labor Party's annual retreat that during the break she had hoped to find the energy to continue leading but had failed.

Ardern said that next general election will be held on October 14, and until then he will remain a member of Parliament.

“I’m not leaving because I believe we can’t win the next election, but because I believe we can and will,” he declared.

Second Ardern, his resignation will take effect until February 7th and the labor caucus will vote on a new leader on January 22nd. Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson indicated he would not put his name forward.

no secret

Ardern assured that there is no secret behind his resignation.

“I am human. We give as much as we can for as long as we can and then it's time. And for me, the time has come”, explained the prime minister.

“I'm leaving because with such a privileged job comes great responsibility. The responsibility of knowing when you are the right person to lead – and also when you are not.”
