First wave of covid-19 in 2023: positivity rises to 26% with new variant identified

Test positivity for Covid-19 grew from 14% to 26% in one month (from the week ending January 28th to February 25th), revealing the first wave of 2023. In two months, the XBB variant spread , replacing BQ.1 and is currently identified in 94,7% of samples positive for the disease, shows a survey by the Todos pela Saúde Institute.

The analyzes are from All for Health Institute (ITpS) based on 583.276 tests performed by partner laboratories Dasa, DB Molecular, HLAGyn and Sabin from May 1, 2022 to February 25, 2023.

According to ITps, the new wave has a different pattern than what was observed in 2022, when there was a period of six to seven weeks of low positivity (below 10%). This time the break was curto.

“This probably occurred because the previous and current waves were caused by subvariants with very different genetic profiles. Furthermore, events with large crowds may also have accelerated the replacement of BQ.1 by XBB”, says ITpS scientific researcher Anderson Brito, who coordinates the monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Covid-19 in the states

Goiás and the Federal District continue with low positivity rateswhile in São Paulo (32%) and Rio de Janeiro (30%), the percentage is high.

In other states, the level of demand for tests makes analysis impossible. It is important to remember that Covid-19 outbreaks do not occur synchronously in the country.

Vaccination

It is important to remember that the increase in covid positivity will not necessarily lead to an increase in hospitalizations, because of vaccines. 😉

Therefore, it is important to warn: pay attention to the Covid-19 vaccination schedule and look for health centers for immunization with booster doses.

On the 27th, the Ministry of Health launched the National Vaccination Movement with the bivalent vaccine, starting with the most vulnerable.
