Italy: Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigns

This Thursday (21), the Italian Prime Minister left office, after the parties that would form a broad unit to rebuild his government boycotted the coalition. It was Mario Draghi's second resignation in two weeks, a period of obvious political crisis. Elections to replace him should be brought forward to September or October of this year.

Mario Draghi presented his resignation this Thursday (21) to the Italian president, Serio Matttarella. The reason? The Prime Minister's coalition government is going through an internal crisis, which culminated last Wednesday (210) in a boycott by right-wing parties of the pact previously supported by his government.

This is second resignation request which the Prime Minister presents in two weeks. The first was rejected by Mattarella. In the most recent statement, Draghi said he was reiterating “his resignation and that of the Executive he heads”. The prime minister will provisionally remain in office until a replacement is defined.

The Prime Minister's resignation had negative impact on the Italian economy, which saw its financial markets fall. The expectation is that the Italian elections for head of state will be brought forward. Mattarella meets this Thursday with the presidents of the houses of Parliament.
