Electoral propaganda: see what can and cannot be done

The period in which electoral propaganda is permitted begins on Tuesday (16). Do you know how it works in practice? O Curto News tells you.

Candidates, parties and federations are free to ask for votes in the streets and on the internet from this Tuesday. The valid period for carrying out electoral campaigns will end 46 days later, on October 1st. Free electoral advertising on radio and television begins on August 26th. 

ADVERTISING

The first round of elections takes place on October 2, when voters go to the polls to elect the President of the Republic, governors, senators, federal, state and district deputies. A possible second round for the presidential race and for state governments will be on October 30th. 

What is released during the period:

  • taking walks
  • motorcades with sound car from 9am to 22pm
  • distribution of campaign material
  • rallies from 8am until midnight 
  • purchase of paid advertising in the media (respecting the maximum space per edition of one eighth per newspaper page and one quarter of a magazine page).

What is not permitted, according to the law:

  • free shows 
  • activities outside pre-established time limits 
  • purchase of more than ten electoral propaganda ads in different newspapers and magazines, on different dates 
  • online electoral propaganda that is not identified as advertising and does not carry the name of the candidate, party, coalition or federation
  • advertising through telemarketing 
  • Boosting content by supporters (messages can only be sent to voters who voluntarily register to receive them)
