Protests against judicial reform gain new momentum in Israel

Tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated this Saturday in Tel Aviv and other cities, for the 27th consecutive week, against the judicial reform promoted by the government of conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The protesters were more numerous than in recent weeks, according to organizers, who counted 180 people in Tel Aviv. The Israeli press also reported higher numbers (around 150.000 protesters), ahead of the introduction in parliament of a key reform provision next Monday.

“If we don’t stop what’s happening now, it won’t be possible to go back,” said technology worker Amit Lev, 40.

Formed last December, with the support of far-right parties and ultra-Orthodox Jewish formations, Netanyahu's government is trying to approve a judicial reform that seeks to increase the power of Parliament over that of the Supreme Court.

After announcing a pause in the reform process at the end of March, the government relaunches its offensive next Monday, when Parliament will examine in first reading a bill that seeks to annul the possibility of the Judiciary ruling on the “ reasonableness” of government decisions.

This provision affectsaria, among other things, the appointment of ministers. In January, Netanyahu was forced to remove the government's number two, Aryeh Deri, convicted of tax fraud, after the intervention of the Supreme Court.
