Protests in Peru leave hundreds of tourists stranded in the Machu Picchu region

Hundreds of foreign tourists were blocked this Wednesday in the region of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, after train circulation was suspended due to protests caused by the political situation in Peru. Visitors are blocked in the city of Aguas Calientes, at the foot of the mountain where the jewel of Peruvian tourism stands. "We can't go back to Cusco and go to another country due to the protests. I'm with children, for me it's a problem," Israeli tourist Gale Dut told AFP.

According to Machu Picchu city hall, 779 tourists of different nationalities have been stranded since yesterday. “I should have left Cusco yesterday and caught a flight to Lima to go home, but the situation is not clear at the moment,” commented a Belgian tourist, who identified himself as Walter.

The train service between Cusco and Machu Picchu has been suspended since yesterday due to the violent protests that began last Monday in Cusco, which included attempts to take over that city's international airport.

Darwin Baca, mayor of Machu Picchu Pueblo, whose original name is Aguas Calientes, asked the government for humanitarian support, with helicopters to remove tourists from the United States, Mexico and Spain from the city.
