Who will attend Charles III's coronation?

Charles III's coronation will have around 2 guests - far fewer than the 8 who filled Westminster Abbey for his mother's coronation in 1953. This is what is known at the moment about those present and absent. ⤵️

✅ Confirmed attendance:

  • O Prince Harry, the king's youngest son, who distanced himself from most members of his family after resigning from his role and publicly criticizing the monarchy, confirmed that he will attend after months of negotiations with Buckingham Palace. He will not be accompanied by his wife Meghan, who will stay in California with their children.
  • World leaders like Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, and the heads of state of France Emmanuel Macron, from Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, from Poland Andrzej Duda and the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
  • The president Squid also confirmed his presence.
  • The British Prime Minister Rishi sunak and his wife, Akshata Murthy, along with government officials.
  • Representatives of British civil society honored by the monarchy, including English student Max Woosey, who slept in a tent in his garden for three years to raise money for charity, and Richard Thomas, who delivered thousands of medicines to sick people during the Covid-19 lockdowns.
  • Four hundred young people from organizations supported by the royal family.
  • Members of other monarchies such as Kings Felipe VI and Letizia of Spain, Princes Federico and Maria of Denmark, Princes Fumihito and Kiko of Japan, Princes Albert II and Charlene of Monaco, King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan.
  • Around 80 members of the lower and upper houses of the British Parliament.
  • Tom Parker Bowles e Laura Lopez, children of Queen Camilla's first marriage.

❌ Absent or uninvited:

  • The President of the United States, Joe Biden, will be represented by his wife, the First Lady Jill Biden. According to British and American officials, this is in line with precedent, as no US president has ever attended the coronation of a British sovereign. The White House insisted that the absence of Biden, known for his Irish roots, was “not a slight.” He said the president and the king have a “good relationship” and Biden accepted Charles’ invitation to make a state visit to the United Kingdom.
  • Prince Harry's wife, Meghan Markle, will remain in California with her children Lilibet and Archie, whose fourth birthday coincides with the day of the coronation.
  • A most British dukes. These often attended dressed in coronation robes and crowns, but were affected by Charles III's desire for the guest list to be “meritocratic and not aristocratic”. The Duke of Rutland expressed his disappointment to the Daily Mail newspaper. It was “families like mine that supported the royal family for more than 1.000 years,” he said.
  • As wives of British parliamentarians were not invited either.
  • Sarah Ferguson, ex-wife of Prince Andrew, brother of the king, with whom he still lives at the royal family's Windsor estate and who has repeatedly shamed the monarchy, also did not receive an invitation.
  • Lady Pamela Mountbatten, daughter of Charles III's great-uncle and mentor, Count Mountbatten of Myanmar, who was a bridesmaid at Elizabeth II's wedding to Philip in 1947, will also not attend.
