Who is Jorge Messias, chosen by Lula to occupy the AGU

National Treasury attorney Jorge Rodrigo Araújo Messias, known for having been deputy head of Legal Affairs in the Civil House of the Dilma Rousseff (PT) government, was chosen to command the AGU (General Attorney's Office) during Lula's mandate. The announcement was made on December 22 by the president-elect. See the profile.

“Bessias”

Jorge Messias became popularly known as “Bessias” when former judge Sérgio Moro ordered the release of a series of tapped telephone conversations between Dilma Rousseff – then president of the Republic – and former president Lula, as part of Operation Lava Jato.

In the conversation – in poor audio quality – Dilma tells Lula that she is ordering “Bessias” to bring him the “term of inauguration”. Lula had been appointed by the president as minister, while he was being investigated for allegedly illegally acquiring the triplex in Guarujá (SP).

Remember the speech: “Next, I'm sending 'Bessias' along with the paper so we can have it, and only use it if necessary, which is the term of possession, okay?!”, said Dilma.

The speech had a bad impact. Critics and opponents of Lula said that he would be appointed minister to escape Sérgio Moro with privileged jurisdiction. The PT leader's inauguration as minister never took place. But, it was left to “Bessias”. 👀

In 2021, the plenary of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) declared Sérgio Moro partial in the conviction of former president Lula, annulling the trial in the triplex case, as well as all the evidence collected.

History of Jorge Messias

In addition to being Dilma's former advisor, Jorge Messias was a prosecutor at the Central Bank and fiscal advisor at BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), always in PT governments.

He worked as a parliamentary assistant to Jaques Wagner, former governor of Bahia and now senator of the Republic (PT).

Messias also held prominent positions in the ministries of Science, Technology and Information and Education until he became sub-head of Legal Affairs at the Civil House of the Dilma government.

In this last position, he commanded the defense of the president in Operation Zealots.
