Racism: Seu Jorge is harassed during a show at a club in Porto Alegre

Singer Seu Jorge was the target of racist attacks during a performance at the club Grêmio Náutico União, in Porto Alegre (RS), last Friday (14). The artist was hired for a show to reopen a club room and the crime would have occurred while he and the band were preparing for the "encore". Monkey sounds and offensive words were heard in the audience. In a statement, the club informed that "if the practice of a racist act is proven, those involved will be held responsible."

The accusations emerged on social media, after internet users who were present at the event stated that part of the audience had shouted insults after the musician invited a young black man to play on stage.

After that, he would have made a brief speech against the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility and in defense of young black people from Brazilian communities, which would have been the motivation for the racial insults. Seu Jorge would also have made an “L” with his hands, a justification used by some internet users for the insults.

In the reports, some say that monkey sounds were made and that someone shouted words like “vagabond” and “safado”.

After the repercussions of what happened, Grêmio Náutico União published an official note, stating that it is “internally investigating the facts” and that, if the crime is proven, those “involved will be held responsible”.

Until now, Seu Jorge did not comment on the case.
