United Kingdom under red alert: country expected to have hottest day in history

Europe is experiencing unprecedented temperatures amid heat waves passing through the continent. At risk to lives, forest fires and urban disruption, authorities such as those in the United Kingdom are declaring a state of emergency to face the situation.

The British are preparing for a week in which temperatures across the country are expected to exceed 40º C, according to meteorologists, an unprecedented mark in the country, surpassing the 38,7º C set in the last record, in this hot season. The scientific community explains that these phenomena have become more common due to climate change at a global level.

In emergency

Last Friday, the 15th, the United Kingdom government issued a red alert for exceptional heat, which could be harmful to health and impact structures such as the transport system, for example. The problem occurs especially in regions unprepared to receive such temperatures. In highly urbanized areas, heat dispersion is more difficult and even worsens air quality, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

European suffocation

The consequences of the heat wave affect all of Europe. Countries such as Croatia, France, Spain and Portugal are facing forest fires that have forced part of the population to leave their homes. Between July 7th and 13th, 238 Portuguese people died as a result of excessive heat.
