Report by the NGO Human Rights Watch highlights the threats to democracy in Brazil

The annual report by the NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) was published this Thursday (12) and addresses situations that violate human rights in several countries. In one of the parts of the text, referring to Brazil, the events during the last year of Bolsonaro's government and the beginning of Lula's government are highlighted – with concern for Brazilian democracy being one of the main focuses. O World Report 2023 – an annual document published by HWR analyzing the situation of human rights in the almost 100 countries where it operates – calls for exemplary punishment for participants in coup acts in Brasília, on the 8th, as a way of discouraging similar acts throughout the Americas and the world.

The document says that, throughout his term, former president Jair Bolsonaro attacked and insulted ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and journalists, in addition to trying to undermine confidence in the electoral system with unfounded allegations of fraud and reinforces that violence politics increased during the election period.

The publication recalls that, in July last year, Bolsonaro told dozens of ambassadors that the Brazilian electoral system was not reliable and that in September, the former president stated that if he did not obtain 60% of the votes, 'something abnormal' would have happened at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

For this reason, the NGO holds former president Jair Bolsonaro responsible for the coup acts that attacked Brazilian democracy.

Likewise, it attributed responsibility to social platforms for not having controlled the dissemination of false information before, during and after the elections – which would have encouraged the scammers.

According to World Report 2023, some points have worsened considerably with regard to human rights in Brazil. Are they:

  • Food insecurity;
  • Environmental destruction;
  • Restriction of sexual rights;
  • Police violence;
  • Inequality and
  • Racism.

For HRW, one of the ways to reduce losses is to give more independence to the Judiciary and I attributed to Lula the responsibility for reinforcing democratic principles such as the independence of powers and transparency in administration, in addition to the free expression of opinion and other basic freedoms. According to the NGO, defending these pillars would strengthen democracy and respect for human rights in the country.

The text also highlights the environmental situation in Brazil, specifically in Amazon, remembering passages such as the deaths of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira.
