Rishi Sunak will be the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Indian billionaire Rishi Sunak is expected to be the new British Prime Minister, succeeding Liz Truss, who stepped down on October 20. His only competitor, the Minister for Relations with Parliament, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew her candidacy for leadership of the Conservative Party after failing to obtain the minimum support of 100 parliamentarians.

Former Finance Minister, Sunak is the first head of government from an ethnic minority to take office in the United Kingdom. Two months after failing in his first attempt to lead the Conservative Party and command the government, Sunak, 42 years old and of Indian origin, was the only candidate with sufficient support from at least 100 Conservative MPs.

Penny Mordant, despite claiming that she is “the best positioned to unify the party” with the “support of all wings” of the formation, registered only a few dozen supporters just a few hours before the deadline for submitting candidacies, while Sunak it was approaching 190, according to the British press.

Orthodoxy

A former banking executive, grandson of Indian immigrants, who studied at elite British schools, Sunak will be the first head of government of the Hindu religion at the start of Diwali, an important Hindu festival very popular among the British Indian community.

Sunak defends budgetary orthodoxy and is seen by many right-wing MPs as the right person to reassure markets and remove the United Kingdom of the economic and social crisis, aggravated by ultra-liberal plans for Trussing at a time of high inflation.
