Every 14 days, a woman is raped in hospitals in Rio

Yesterday, 11/07, many Brazilians were surprised by the case of a doctor who raped a woman during childbirth in RJ. Data from the Public Security Secretariat shows, however, that sexual abuse in hospital environments is more common than it seems.

The risk of being a woman, parturient or pregnant women in Brazil is far from being exhausted. The prison in the act of anesthetist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra for raping a vulnerable person added yet another tone to the debate about the insecurity to which female bodies in the country are subject.

In Rio de Janeiro, the same state where the doctor was filmed raping a patient during childbirth, 86% of sexual abuse that occurs in hospital environments targets a woman. The data is from the Public Security Institute (ISP) obtained by Globo via the Access to Information Law.

Anesthetist Giovanni Bezerra published a photo on Instagram hours before the medical shift during which he was arrested: “It's that saying: Shrimp that sleep make more money on duty.” In another post, he warned: “you will still hear from me, just wait”.

Only in Rio de Janeiro, between 2015 and 2021, 177 cases of sexual abuse were recorded in hospitals, clinics or similar. Of the total, 90 of the cases were similar to that practiced by Giovanni, being called vulnerable rape – in which the victim is unable to defend herself, in this case under the influence of anesthetics.

The number of occurrences would correspond to the average of 1 daily rape every 2 weeks. Among the victims, 20,9% were children up to 13 years old and 17,7% were teenagers between 14 and 17.

Giovanni's custody hearing takes place this Tuesday, the 12th, to decide whether the accused will remain in custody or whether he can be kept in pre-trial detention. The possibility of other victims having suffered the same abuse by the doctor was not ruled out by the Police.
