Russia declares Greenpeace organization 'undesirable'

The Russian Public Prosecutor's Office declared, this Friday (19), the environmental NGO Greenpeace as an "undesirable" organization and accused it of interference, which means, in practice, a ban on carrying out its activities in the country.

In a statement, Russia's Prosecutor General's Office said Greenpeace International poses a "threat to the foundations of the constitutional order and security" of Russia and seeks to "overthrow power in an unconstitutional manner."

The body also accuses Greenpeace of encouraging “interference” in Russia's internal affairs, of trying to “undermine its economic foundations” and of financing Russian organizations classified by authorities as “foreign agents”.

Greenpeace is also accused of carrying out “information campaigns” to “prevent the implementation of profitable infrastructure and energy projects” for Russia, according to the Prosecutor's Office, as well as promoting “anti-Russian propaganda” and calling for “strengthening sanctions ” against Russia since the beginning of the military campaign in Ukraine.

Opened in 1992, the Russian branch of Greenpeace carries out operations in the country to raise awareness of climate change, combat forest fires, pollution and preserve endangered animal species.

According to the specialized NGO OVD-Info, in Russia, organizations classified as “undesirable” are prohibited from opening structures in the country, carrying out projects, or disseminating information.

Since the beginning of the offensive in Ukraine, Russian authorities have drastically accelerated the repression of critical voices, which also affects cultural circles and environmental organizations.
