Russia closes Swedish consulate and expels five diplomats

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced this Thursday (25) the expulsion of five Swedish diplomats and the closure of the Swedish consulate in Saint Petersburg and its own in the Swedish city of Gothenburg.

“A decision was made to declare five Swedish diplomats persona non grata,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said, according to which Swedish Ambassador Malena Mard was informed of Moscow’s reprisal measures for what it described as “confrontational policy ” from Sweden.

The measure was taken after Sweden announced at the end of April the expulsion of five Russian diplomats for “activities incompatible” with their diplomatic status.

Russia called the expulsion an “openly hostile” act and accused Sweden of carrying out a “Russophobic campaign”.

The Moscow Consulate General in Gothenburg will be closed on September 1, the Russian Foreign Ministry added in a statement.

The Swedish consulate general in St. Petersburg will also have to close its activities, he added.

Ties with Western countries suffered an unprecedented deterioration after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022 and the West adopted sanctions against Moscow.
