Russia closes borders to 500 Americans, including Obama

Russia banned, this Friday (19), entry to its territory for 500 Americans, including former president Barack Obama, as a "response" to the sanctions imposed by Washington.

“In response to sanctions against Russia, frequently imposed by the Biden administration […], entry into the Russian Federation is closed to 500 Americans,” announced the Russian Foreign Ministry, and added that Obama was on the list.

This Friday, the United States added hundreds of companies and individuals to its sanctions list, intensifying its efforts to stifle the Russian economy in retaliation for the offensive in Ukraine.

“Washington should have known a long time ago that no hostile measures against Russia will go unanswered,” the Russian ministry added.

Among the Americans who will not be allowed to enter Russia are television hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, and CNN news anchor Erin Burnett, among others.

Russia reported that it included on its list senators, congressmen and members of think tanks “involved in the propagation of Russophobic attitudes and falsehoods”, in addition to the directors of companies that “supply weapons to Ukraine”.

The environmental protection NGO Greenpeace described Russia's decision to classify its organization as “undesirable” on its territory as “absurd”.

In the same statement, Russia added that it had refused a new request for a consular visit to American journalist Evan Gershkovich, detained in March and accused of espionage.

This denial was provoked by Washington's refusal to grant visas to journalists who were supposed to accompany Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to a UN summit in New York in April.
