Russia will formally annex the Ukrainian territories it controls

Russia will confirm on Friday (30) the annexation of the territories it controls in Ukraine during a ceremony in the Kremlin, where President Vladimir Putin will give a speech, according to an official statement from the Kremlin released this Thursday (29).

“A signing ceremony for agreements on the entry of new territories into the Russian Federation will take place tomorrow (Friday) at 15 pm (9 am Brasília time) in the Kremlin,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

“Vladimir Putin will give a speech at the event,” he added.

The announcement will be made after the organization of annexation “referendums” in four regions of Ukraine partially controlled by Moscow: Donetsk and Lugansk in the east, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south.

Kiev and Western countries called the votes “shams” and said they would not recognize the annexation of the territories.

Russia already annexed the Crimean peninsula (south) in 2014, which was also not recognized by the international community.

The union of Ukrainian territories represents an escalation in Russia's offensive.

Several Russian officials and analysts have stated that, when these areas are annexed and considered by Moscow as part of its territory, Russia will be able to use nuclear weapons to “defend” them.

Putin declared last week that Russia was willing to use “all means” in its arsenal to “defend” its territory.
