Russia recruited around 120.000 soldiers in 2023

Former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said this Friday (19) that, since January 1, 2023, Moscow has recruited almost 120.000 soldiers for its Army, which is trying to rebuild the ranks weakened by the offensive in Ukraine.

“From January 1 to May 19, 117.400 people were accepted into the Armed Forces under contract and volunteer formations,” Medvedev declared at a meeting on recruitment into the Army.

The current number two of the Russian Security Council welcomed the “continuation of work” to increase the Army’s strength, “within the scope of the instructions given (by President Vladimir Putin) on the topic”.

Anticipating a major counteroffensive by Ukrainian troops, Moscow has launched an extensive recruitment campaign in recent weeks.

Authorities have not announced numerical targets, but some Russian media outlets report that the Army hopes to recruit hundreds of thousands of men, offering contracts on particularly attractive terms.

The campaign is being carried out on social media, and several posters promoting the Army have appeared on the streets of Russian cities.

Moscow organized a first “partial” mobilization of at least 300.000 men last September, causing tens of thousands of people who refused to go to the “front” to flee abroad.

Experts claim that the Russian Army has already suffered heavy losses in Ukraine, which are being kept secret by the military hierarchy.
