São Paulo loses to Atlético-GO in the South American Championship

A disastrous performance, including an expulsion in the first half and failures by Jandrei and Diego Costa, put São Paulo's dream of claiming the 2022 Copa Sul-America title at risk. In Goiânia, Rogério Ceni's team paid costly for his mistakes on Thursday night and lost to Atlético-GO 3-1, in the first game of the competition's semi-final

Now, to advance to the decision, the team will need to beat the Goiás team by three goals in the return match, scheduled for the 8th, at Morumbi. São Paulo's victory by two goals takes the decision to penalties.

Rogério Ceni chose to start the game with three defenders and a lighter midfield. The idea was to tighten Atlético-GO's ball flow and try to create opportunities to resolve the match in the first half.

On the other hand, the team from Goiás had the debut of Eduardo Baptista in charge of the team, replacing the fired Jorginho. With little time to work, he maintained the team's base and sought offense by quickly exchanging passes.

And that's how the home team opened the scoring, just ten minutes into the game. In a grotesque marking failure by São Paulo, Marlon Freitas played quickly to Dudu on the right wing. The full-back went to the baseline and crossed just enough for Jorginho to just divert it into the goal and make the Atlético fans celebrate.

São Paulo, who until they conceded the goal were playing a good game, reorganized quickly and reached a draw shortly afterwards – also exploiting an opponent's mistake.

Midfielder Edson Fernando went to get the ball in defense and left with it dominated until midfield. He didn't touch and ended up disarmed by Reinaldo. The ball fell to Rodrigo Nestor who, from the edge of the area on the left, crossed the ball for Luciano to head the ball past goalkeeper Renan and tie the game.

In a balanced game, any mistake can be fatal. At 31, Igor Gomes made a silly foul on Jorginho, holding the Atlético-GO player by the shirt. At 39, once again the midfielder messed up – he tackled Edson Fernando with excessive force, received a second yellow card and ended up being sent off the field.

The expulsion made Rogério Ceni dismantle his scheme with three defenders in the first half – with two substitutions before the break, the São Paulo coach sent Welington and Patrick onto the field. Ceni placed the team with four defenders and four athletes in midfield, leaving only Calleri as a striker – the problem is that he didn't rebuild the sector with another midfielder.

With one less, it became even more difficult

The second half started with Atlético-GO trying to assert the advantage of having one more player on the field. With imposition in midfield, the team maintained possession of the ball, but did not reach it effectively. Eduardo Baptista made a change that made his team much more offensive, putting striker Shaylon on the field, and he was soon rewarded for it.

Until eleven minutes in, once again the Goiás team arrived from the right. Marlon Freitas advanced quickly and crossed low into the area. Jandrei stretched out and managed to miss the ball, which bounced off Diego Costa and left Shaylo, who was sitting on the floor, to just push it into the empty goal – 2 to 1 Atlético-GO.

São Paulo couldn't reach Renan's goal with any danger and, calmly, Atlético-GO always arrived with danger. At 32, the team from Goiás reached the third goal. Léo Pereira received it on the left and passed as he wanted by Diego Costa, entered the area and touched Jandrei's exit to enlarge.

São Paulo will have a week to reorganize itself to try to advance to the final – an elimination against Atlético-GO will be a disaster for the team.
