Supermoons happen 3 or 4 times a year. According to astronomers, the Supermoon happens when it passes closest to Earth, during the Full Moon, and when the side we always see is fully illuminated by the Sun.
“The Moon's orbit has two points: the apogee, when it passes furthest from Earth, 405 thousand kilometers away; and perigee, when it is just over 360 thousand kilometers from our planet. In other words, 43 thousand kilometers closer”, explained astronomer Josina Nascimento, from the National Observatory for Agência Brasil.
