Telegram will appeal service suspension in Brazil

The messaging application Telegram will appeal the suspension ordered by the Court in Brazil, according to a statement released on Thursday (27) on the platform by its executive director, Pavel Durov, in which he promete "defend the privacy and freedom of expression" of users.

On Wednesday, the court ordered the temporary suspension of Telegram for failing to provide the authorities with requested data on neo-Nazi groups operating on the platform, amid an investigation related to the recent wave of violence in schools.

According to Durov, the requested data is “technologically impossible for the company to collect.” “We are appealing the decision and awaiting the final resolution” of the case, he added.

The court ordered a fine of R$1 million for each day that Telegram does not fully cooperate with the investigation.

“No matter the cost, we will defend our users in Brazil and their right to private communication,” added Durov.

This Thursday, the application worked unstable, according to users, who shared tips for escaping the blockade, AFP found.

The creator of Telegram – an application in which communication is end-to-end encrypted – recalled other cases in which the company left markets, such as China, Iran or Russia, because local laws “opposed” its privacy principles or imposed requirements “technologically unfeasible”.

“Such events, while unfortunate, are still preferable to the betrayal of our users and the beliefs on which we were founded,” Durov argued in the statement.

The Espírito Santo Court, the Federal Police and the Public Ministry had requested personal data from Telegram of all members of the “Anti-Semitic Movement” and “Anti-Semitic Front” channels.

Authorities link these groups to attacks on schools in recent months.

In November last year, a 16-year-old teenager shot and killed four people and injured more than ten others in two schools in Espírito Santo. This young man interacted with anti-Semitic groups on Telegram, according to police sources cited by the G1 website.

The court said that the company “partially” complied with the authorities’ request, and accused it of “not cooperating with the investigation”.
