Earthquake that hit Turkey is the worst since 1939

This Monday (6), thousands of people died and were injured due to a 7,8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey and part of Syria. In 1939, the country suffered a seismic shock that was just as strong. Understand the differences between tremors.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), this Monday's tremor (6) was as strong as one recorded in the country in 1939, which killed more than 30 thousand people.

The tremor of Erzincan, in Eastern Anatolia, killed around 33 thousand people and had the same seismic intensity. The disaster is considered the worst in Türkiye's recent history.

According to seismologist Stephen Hicks of the Department of Earth Sciences at Imperial College London, this second earthquake (6) “appears to be related to the East Anatolian Fault zone, which offsets the Arabian and Anatolian tectonic plates.”

“Just seeing the first and truly devastating images of the earthquake damage in Turkey, it is clear that the impacts will be enormous and that this event will go down in history. One of the largest instrumentally recorded earthquakes to directly hit a populated area,” added.

A Turkey is located on the Anatolian Plate and borders two major faults in this system: the Northern one, which crosses the country from west to east, and the Oriental, which is in the southeast region.

The last major earthquakes to hit Turkey with a high number of victims occurred:

  • October 2011, with 138 deaths;
  • March 2010, with 51 deaths; It is
  • August 1999, with more than 17 thousand victims.
