The positivity of tests for COVID-2 it went from 20% to 32% in just two weeks, from October 29th to November 12th. What does that mean? Yes, we are experiencing a third wave of Ômicron, a variant of the coronavirus.

With this increase in cases, the diagnosis of covid-19 is predominant among respiratory viruses (SARS-CoV-2, Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Influenza A and B).

The analyzes are from All for Health Institute (ITpS) based on 479.835 tests carried out by partner laboratories Dasa, DB Molecular and HLAGyn, from February 1st to November 12th.

“In the last report, ITpS signaled the beginning of a possible third wave of Ômicron, which is now consolidating. In addition to the growth in cases, we are observing a significant increase in hospitalizations, mainly among people who have not received three or four doses of the vaccine, according to age and health conditions”, warns the director-president of the Institute, Jorge Kalil .

Wearing a mask is recommended

“We once again reinforce the need to use a mask, especially in crowded and/or poorly ventilated environments. People should also take all the doses of vaccine they are entitled to and test when there is contact with infected people or suspected,” reinforces Kalil.

In October, positive cases for covid jumped from 3% to 20% – the previously released figure of 17% was updated following the entry of tests that had been carried out last month.

There was an increase in positive tests in all age groups, according to the ITS: in the groups 0 to 4 years old, 5 to 9 years old and 10 to 19 years old, the variation was 2 to 3 percentage points; between 20 and 29 years old, 10 points; and in the others, 14 to 16 percentage points. Currently, the highest percentage is in the 50 to 59 age group, with 46% of tests carried out with positive results. See the other percentages in the table below.

Tests by regions

In relation to the states with a sufficient number of tests for analysis, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro lead.

Em Sao Paulo, in two weeks, positivity went from 20% to 35% and in Rio, from 26% to 34%. In Goiás, where tests carried out by partner laboratories had not detected a positive result two weeks ago, the percentage is 17%; in the Federal District, it went from 2% to 8% and in Minas Gerais it remained stable, at 6%.

How do the tests work?

The molecular tests used by laboratories (RT-PCR and Flowchip) detect multiple pathogens, which cause similar symptoms, such as fever, cough, runny nose and respiratory discomfort, and require care in children and the elderly.

Considering all positive tests for respiratory viruses, 80% detected SARS-CoV-2; 12%, RSV; and 8%, Influenza A.

Between the increase in cases of Influenza A in October and Covid this month, there was a silent outbreak of RSV in children under 4 years of age. The circulation of this virus has been growing since October (8,8% positivity on the 15th) and reached its peak at the beginning of the month (15,6% on the 5th; 12% on the 12th).

O Institute All for Health is monitoring the circulation of respiratory viruses using data from partner laboratories — this is the 16th report.

The objective is to provide the public authorities, the press and society information quickly, to help make healthcare decisions.

At the same time, ITpS also monitors Ômicron subvariants in circulation in the country.
