Nepal court orders release of Charles Sobhraj, the 'Serpent'

The Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the release, this Wednesday (21), of Frenchman Charles Sobhraj, the serial killer portrayed as "Serpent" in the Netflix series "Paradise and the Serpent", responsible for a series of murders in across Asia in the 1970s.

The highest legal authority in the Asian country determined that Sobhraj, aged 78, imprisoned in this Himalayan republic since 2003 for the murder of two American tourists, was released for health reasons.

After a troubled childhood and several prison sentences in France for petty crimes, Sobhraj began traveling the world in the early 1970s and ended up in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

His “modus operandi” was to charm and befriend his victims — many of them Western backpackers in search of spirituality — and then drug them, rob them and kill them.

Of Indian and Vietnamese origin, Sobhraj has been linked to more than 20 murders. He used to use the male victims' passports to travel to the next destination.

Sobhraj's nickname, “Snake“, came from his ability to assume other identities to escape justice. It became the title of a successful series made by the BBC and Netflix, based on his life, “Paradise and the Serpent”.
