TSE bars Roberto Jefferson's candidacy for President

Former deputy Roberto Jefferson (PTB) - yes, central pivot of the 'mensalão' scandal - had his candidacy analyzed this Thursday (1) by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and denied. Until September 12th, the electoral court intends to evaluate all candidacies presented for the general elections in Brazil.

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) decided to bar the candidacy of former PTB deputy Roberto Jefferson for the presidency of the Republic. The party will have ten days to choose a replacement candidate. The decision took place this Thursday morning (1) unanimously.

Ineligible, why?

The former deputy was convicted of administrative improbity in the 'mensalão' scheme (monthly fee paid by the PT government to members of Congress for the approval of Executive agendas).

The Public Electoral Ministry had already challenged the politician's candidacy on August 18, arguing that, having been convicted of the corruption scheme, the PTB candidate remains ineligible until the end of 2023.

Furthermore, Roberto Jefferson is under house arrest for an investigation into anti-democratic digital militias.
