TSE sets trial date for action that could make Bolsonaro ineligible

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) will begin a trial on June 22 for abuse of political power and disinformation against former president Jair Bolsonaro, who may become ineligible, the court announced this Monday (5).

Bolsonaro is being investigated for attacking the electoral justice system and criticizing, without evidence, the reliability of electronic voting during a meeting with ambassadors in July last year, less than three months before the October presidential elections, in which he was defeated by the incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In front of dozens of ambassadors and diplomats, Bolsonaro said he wanted to “correct flaws” in the system and have “transparency” in voting, in a speech lasting almost an hour at Palácio da Alvorada.

“I’m being accused of a scam all the time (…) I’m questionI’m going ahead because we have time to solve the problem, with the participation of the Armed Forces”, added the then president, who illustrated his speech with a PowerPoint presentation on the Brazilian electoral system.

The TSE will meet in a plenary session on June 22 to analyze the accusation, but a decision may be postponed. If necessary, assessments can continue on June 27th and 29th, the agency announced in a statement.

If convicted, Bolsonaro could be barred from running for public office for eight years.

“Abuse of political power”

The Public Electoral Ministry defended Bolsonaro's ineligibility “due to abuse of political power and misuse of the media”, indicated the TSE.

The former president faces more than a dozen administrative proceedings in the electoral court for alleged abuse of political and economic power during the 2022 electoral campaign.

Furthermore, he is the target of four investigations at the Federal Supreme Court (STF), with possible prison sentences, including his alleged role as the intellectual author and instigator of the attack by thousands of his supporters on the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília on January 8.

Bolsonaro made the electronic voting system a target of attacks due to its alleged vulnerability, which according to him could be used in favor of Lula and the PT.

Brazil adopted the electronic voting system in the 1996 municipal elections, and to date no security problems have been proven.
