Twitter considers abandoning EU code against disinformation

Twitter is considering ceasing to apply the European Union (EU) code of good practice against disinformation on the internet, an agreement to which the main social networks are part, sources from the bloc said this Thursday (25).

The Elon Musk has communicated its intentions to the European Commission (the EU's executive body), but has not yet made them official, the same sources said.

The European code of good practice, created in 2018, is applied by around 30 companies, including sector giants Meta, Google, Twitter, Microsoft and TikTok.

These groups participated in writing the text, which includes approximately 40 recommendations, aimed at establishing better cooperation with checking services and stopping advertising pages that spread fake news.

After acquiring the bird's social network at the end of last year, Musk has softened moderation on Twitter and appears likely to amplify the voices of known propagators of false information.

According to European sources, Twitter stated that it preferred to trust the discretion of its user community rather than fact-checking services.

“If (Musk) is not serious about the code, it is better that he abandons it,” said a European Commission official, contacted by AFP.

The vice-president of the European Commission responsible for Values and Transparency, Vera Jourova, indicated, at the end of April, that she felt “increasingly uncomfortable with Twitter”, especially due to the presence of Russian propaganda on that platform.

Jourova also expressed her discomfort at the lack of staff on the social network who are responsible for fighting misinformation, after the large number of layoffs carried out by its new owner.

Consulted by AFP, Twitter's press service responded with an automatic email containing a poop emoji.
