Ukraine says it shot down six Russian hypersonic missiles

The Ukrainian government said on Tuesday (16) that it shot down six Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missiles during a night attack on Kiev.

“Another incredible success of the Ukrainian Air Force! During the night, our sky defenders shot down SIX Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and 12 other missiles,” Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov wrote on Twitter.

Ukraine announced a week ago that it shot down a Kinzhal hypersonic missile for the first time using systems supplied by the United States.

Kinzhal (“dagger” in Russian) missiles are more difficult to intercept than other types of projectiles.

Russian President Vladimir Putin presented this missile in 2018 and called it an “ideal weapon” due to its difficulty in intercepting.

Kiev received in mid-April the first Patriot, one of the most advanced anti-aircraft defense systems in the United States, used to shoot down the first Kinzhal missile.

Ukrainian authorities have not disclosed which system was used to shoot down the Kinzhal missiles in last night's attacks.

Some debris fell in several Kiev neighborhoods, including the Ukrainian capital's zoo, and three people were injured, according to the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko.
