Latest from Ukraine: new Russian bombings cause power outages in much of the country

The Ukrainian government has denounced new large-scale attacks by Russia against the country's energy infrastructure. According to Zelensky's government, three people died and most Ukrainian territories are without electricity in the middle of winter.

“There are power cuts tonight in most Ukrainian regions,” said Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky in his daily address on social media.

“Due to significant damage to the network, it is difficult for us to restore electricity in the regions of Kharkov, Kiev, Odessa, Mikolaiv, Kherson and Lviv,” lamented the president of the Ukrenergo electricity company, Volodimir Kudritsky, in statements to Ukrainian television.

The Russian attacks left “three dead and six injured, including a child”, said Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastirski.

Missile on Belarusian territory

Belarus (or Belarus), a country allied with Russia, stated that a Ukrainian missile fell on its territory this Thursday. Authorities released images that they presented as fragments of that missile in a field in the southwest of the country and summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to demand an investigation.

Ukraine argued that it could be a “deliberate provocation” by Russia to “involve Belarus in the war”.

The Russian army “gave its cruise missiles a trajectory so that their interception would occur in Belarusian airspace,” the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said.

For its part, the Ukrainian army stated that it shot down 54 of 69 missiles fired by Russian troops.
