Latest from Ukraine: Russia says it has conquered the Ukrainian city of Soledar

The Russian Army said this Friday (13) that it had completely conquered the city of Soledar, in eastern Ukraine, and claimed a first notable victory on the ground, after several humiliating setbacks in recent months.

“On the afternoon of January 12th, the liberation of the city of Solar, which is important for the successful continuation of offensive operations” in the Donetsk region, the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

Ukrainian resistance

This Friday morning (13), the deputy minister of Defense, Ganna Malyar, said that the Ucrania resisted a “high-intensity” Russian offensive in the city of Solar, where the Russia had sent more troops.

“Hostilities continue. The enemy has launched almost all of its main forces into the Donetsk region and is maintaining a high-intensity offensive,” said Malyar on Telegram, after ensuring that the night was difficult.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet at 20pm GMT (17pm Brasília time) to discuss the situation in Ucrania, 11 months after the start of the Russian invasion.

The Russians tirelessly tried to conquer this area of ​​eastern Ucrania, with its eyes focused, in particular, on Bakhmut, 15 kilometers southwest of Solar.

The capture of Solar – which had 10 inhabitants before the conflict, but is now completely devastated – represents a symbolic military victory for Moscow, after the setbacks suffered by its troops since September.

The fighting in and around Solar they last several months, but their intensity has increased considerably in recent days.
