Latest from Ukraine: Russia recognizes death of more than 60 soldiers in Ukrainian bombing

Russia acknowledged this Monday (2) that it lost 63 soldiers in a Ukrainian bombing attack on a location controlled by Moscow in eastern Ukraine, after a bloody weekend for both sides in the conflict. The Russian army - which rarely publicizes its casualties - has not yet reported so many losses in a single attack since the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.

The Russian Ministry of Defense detailed that the bombing “with four missiles” took place in the town of Makiivka, occupied by Russia in the eastern province of Donetsk, and that it hit “a temporary deployment center” of the Army. The ministry did not detail the exact date on which the bombing took place, but said it was an attack using HIMARS rocket launchers, a type of weapon delivered by the United States to the Ucrania.

The Ukrainian Army acknowledged having carried out bombings against up to ten vehicles and an unspecified number of soldiers in Makiivka and asserts that the attack took place on December 31st. The announcement of these losses provoked criticism of the Russian military command, accused by former separatist leader Igor Strelkov of storing ammunition in the unprotected building.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that his country's forces have shot down more than 80 drones since the beginning of 2023. “In the near future, this number may increase.” Zelensky's office announced that a summit meeting between Ukraine and the European Union is scheduled for February 3 in Kiev, at which financial and military aid will be discussed.
