Latest from Ukraine: Zelensky thanks the EU for support and calls for speedy arms deliveries

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, thanked, this Thursday (9), the leaders of the European Union (EU) for their "unwavering support" for his country and asked for more weapons to resist the Russian offensive against his territory, which began almost one year.

“I personally thank you for this unwavering support for my country (…) You cannot think of a free Europe without Ukraine”, said the Ukrainian president, when participating in a summit of leaders of the UE in Brussels.

In his message to EU leaders, Zelensky reiterated his call to speed up arms deliveries and add fighter jets and long-range missiles to military aid packages.

“I want to thank you for (…) understanding how much we need this (…) artillery guns, ammunition, modern tanks, long-range missiles and modern fighters”said the president.

"We must go faster than our aggressionr”, he insisted.

The leader also thanked “to the European nations for understanding that our brave soldiers fight against the terror of Russia with your support.”

the meeting of Zelensky with the leaders of UE It took place under strict security regulations, to the point where all participants had to leave their cell phones outside the room. The Ukrainian president's speech was broadcast live.

Shortly before the summit, the leaders of the 27 EU member states and the top leaders of the European institutions posed for a photo with Zelensky within the European Council.

The Ukrainian president was received like a hero, with ovations and cheers, at the headquarters of the European Parliament, where he gave a speech to an extraordinary plenary session.
