Latest from Ukraine: Zelensky says country needs more time for counteroffensive

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, said in an interview with the BBC channel that the country's army needs more time to prepare a far-reaching counteroffensive against Russian troops. The Ukrainian army is training a new contingent of forces and has stockpiled ammunition and equipment supplied by Western countries that analysts say will be crucial to retaking territory captured by Russia.

“With (what we have) we can move forward and be successful. But we would lose a lot of people. I think this is unacceptable. So, we have to wait. We still need a little more time”, declared Zelensky in the interview.

The timetable for Kiev to begin actions to recover territories in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk (east), as well as in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia (south), remains an open question.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov declared in April that “preparations are coming to an end.”

“The equipment was promehad, prepared and partially delivered. In a broad sense, we are prepared,” he added. “When God wants, with good weather and the commanders’ decision, we will do it,” he added.

He added that the powerful Abrams tanks promebelieved by the United States “will not have time to participate in the counteroffensive”, because delivery to Ukraine is scheduled for the end of 2023.

Wagner Group complains about lack of ammunition

The founder of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner, Yevgueni Prigozhin, accused Zelensky of being “dishonest” in his statements to the BBC because the Ukrainian counteroffensive “is in full swing.”

On Wednesday, a Ukrainian military commander said Kiev's forces had carried out counterattacks in Bakhmut, the epicenter of fighting in eastern Ukraine, which forced Russian troops to retreat in some areas.

“In (Bakhmut’s) direction, units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces penetrate from the flanks and, unfortunately, in some places they are successful,” Prigozhin said. Wagner group fighters are on the front line of this battle.

In open conflict with Russia's military leadership, the founder of the Wagner group complains about the lack of ammunition for his men and has already threatened to abandon Bakhmut.

Foreign aid to Ukraine

Ukraine continues to receive foreign aid: the United Kingdom announced that it will be the first country to supply long-range missiles to the country. This equipment has a range of over 250 kilometers, more than any other weapon supplied to Kiev to date by Western countries.

“The donation of these weapons systems offers Ukraine the best chance of defending itself against Russia’s continued aggression, in particular deliberate attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, which are contrary to international law,” said British Defense Minister Ben Wallace , to Parliament.

The Storm Shadow missile was jointly developed by the United Kingdom and France. With their long range, the projectiles have the ability to reach areas in eastern Ukraine controlled by Russian troops.

“Ukraine has the right to defense. The use of Storm Shadow will allow Ukraine to provoke the withdrawal of Russian forces established on sovereign Ukrainian territory,” Wallace highlighted.
