Verstappen is declared two-time F1 world champion after Leclerc is penalized in Japan

Winner of the Japanese GP, which was interrupted for around two hours due to rain that fell this Sunday on the Suzuka circuit, Dutchman Max Verstappen was declared two-time Formula 1 world champion in a general confusion after a penalty was applied to his Monegasque rival Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) shortly after the end of the race.

At the end of a race that was interrupted on the third lap due to weather conditions and two retirements, Verstappen (Red Bull) crossed the finish line ahead of Leclerc and fellow Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull).

But Leclerc, second in the World Cup, ended up being penalized and lost his place to Pérez. This change of positions allowed the 25-year-old Dutchman to become world champion for the second consecutive season, and just as happened in 2021, in a very confusing end to the GP.
