“Don’t come to Portugal”, says meme satirizing Bolsonaro supporters; video goes viral on TikTok and circulates on WhatsApp

A video made by a Portuguese man is going viral on TikTok and is already circulating in different WhatsApp groups in Brazil. With irony, the recording exposes 7 reasons why supporters of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro should not go to Portugal - and highlights that the country is home to everything that is fought by Bolsonaro supporters in Brazil: legal abortion, decriminalization of drug consumption, a group of communist deputies and left as a majority in Congress. Look!

“We are worried about Brazilians coming to our homeland, running away from President Lula.” The phrase at the beginning of the video that is going viral on social media satirizes the speech of Bolsonarists who talk about leaving Brazil for Portugal, if former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wins the elections on October 30th.

The ironic piece already has several versions on the internet:

Escape to Portugal?

O Google Trends shows a significant increase in searches for “moving to Portugal” recently, amid the turmoil of the presidential race in Brazil. Both those who support Lula (PT) and fear a turnaround by Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and Bolsonaro supporters unhappy with polls of voting intentions that point to the PT as the winner of the elections, report a desire to leave the country – and Portugal has been one of the most popular destinations.

One of the report from Folha de São Paulo newspaper reveals that real estate agencies, law firms and specialized consultancies are reporting “a significant increase in demand following the results of the first round of elections”.

In the report, two Brazilian brokers specializing in the luxury segment in Portugal – who asked to remain anonymous – stated that there is a special interest in the purchase of properties by businesspeople sympathetic to Jair Bolsonaro.
